Deodorant is probably one of the personal care products that we all use everyday without a fail. Of course, there is nothing bad in wanting to avoid unpleasant body odour, but what is the price we are paying to stay fresh?
Unfortunately, as most of personal care products, deodorants contain nasty chemicals that should never end up on our skin. Just to make my point, I highly advice taking a look at this article with more detailed information about the harmful ingredients usually found in deodorants and their impact on our health. Well if this did not make you reconsider switching to more natural product, I do not know what would.
Finding chemical free deodorant is a real challenge, but it is possible. I have to be honest, most of healthy stores carry aluminum and paraben free deodorants, but they still have other nasties in them. Make sure you read the ingredients and look up the ones you are not too familiar with.
The best deodorant I have managed to find and try out is Schmidt’s natural deodorant – all natural formula. However, I figured, since all of the ingredients in this deodorant are easy to get hands on, why not make one yourself. Surprisingly, you do not need that much to make natural deodorant at home. To be more precise, 2 ingredients are more than enough!
You will need:
4 tablespoons of soda
3 tablespoons of coconut oil
Optional: 3-5 drops of lavender essential oil (or any essential oil of your choice)
Combine all the ingredients together and stir away till nice creamy texture. If you want deodorant to be more solid, you can add some arrowroot or cornstarch powder.
Probably the most important question one can have about natural deodorant is does it work?
Soda works great for neutralising odour, while coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, which has amazing antibacterial properties. I must mention, that switching to natural deodorant might be quite a journey. By this time, your skin has chemical build up from the antiperspirant you were using. Therefore, you can expect more sweating than usual – that’s because your body is trying to detox.
I do not use this deodorant on busy days, cause odour is the last thing I want to worry about. However, on easy going days, it works just perfect.
