7 New Habits For 2017

New year – new me, you say? Not necessarily. You are probably great the way you are (just like me), but there is always room for improvement (just like for me). Instead of ditching who you are, in 2017 I invite you (and myself) to be a better self.

(1) Eat mindfully. I am not encouraging one diet over another, instead I suggest eating less processed food and paying more attention to the ingredients.I would recommend avoiding heavily processed foods. Also, foods that are rich in refined sugars and any food without nutritional benefit.

(2) Be active. Signing up to the gym on first of January is a great way to start your fitness journey, but we all know how it usually ends. There are many other ways to stay physically active. Take stairs instead of using elevator. Walk or cycle to work. Not only you will incorporate more physical activities in your life, but will be more environmental friendly too.

(3) Give yourself a break. In this fast paced world it is important to know when to stop and give yourself a break. It can be anything you prefer: meditation, aromatherapy, colouring, singing or taking a bath. It is all up to you.

(4) Practice patience. These days when everything is just one click away, we get easily frustrated when we are asked to wait. Patience is not the strongest side of mine I must admit. I find it rather challenging to wait in a queue at the bank, wait for my parcel to arrive or not be able to learn a new skill immediately. Accepting the fact that not everything happens in a speed of light frees from frustration, anxiety and unreasonable feeling of guilt.

(5) Try something new. Daily life can sometimes get very monotone and in order to keep sane we have to find ways how to entertain ourselves. If you want to pack a backpack an go on a road trip – feel free to do so. However, most of us have responsibilities on our hands and cannot afford to drop everything and run away.Start small. Try new flavour of ice cream, attend an event you wouldn’t normally attend, try new music genre or sport.

(6) Be grateful. Learn to stop and think for a minute of the things you have, instead of things you do not have. Appreciate and embrace it. Do not forget to be more loving towards yourself and others and say genuine “thank you” more often.

(7) Learn how to say YES (or NO). Accepting challenging things in life might lead not only to great accomplishments, but to new self-discoveries and connections. Of course, be selective of what you choose to say “yes” to, which leads me to the next point. Being able to say “no” is as important. Before you dive into adventures or make any kind of decisions, ask yourself if that is really what you want, and not others expect you to want doing.
